Logs in Linux

Linux stores its logs be fault in the /var/log folder. This folder is only accessible to those on the system with root or sudo access. In this folder, a user can find several very important log files as well as specialized folders that may be used by certain applications. The main logs that are of interest in this guide are the auth.log, sys.log, and dpkg.log for a couple of particular logs.

If you wish to view logs in a text editor, that can be done from this folder by double clicking on any of the files. This method of looking at logs is not covered on this site, but can be done by applying the same principles discussed.
